Deck Types

I figure this might help some people A). Understand the different types of decks B). Give people ideals of decks and C). just useful knowledge.

I will start with my favorite deck type which is attribute decks. These center around the attributes of wind,water,fire,light,dark and earth. Most of the cards in this type deck have all of the same attributes, but some do put the staple cards in like Magician of Faith, Witch of the Black Forest, etc.

Simliar to the attribute decks are the monster category decks like spellcasters and fiends, warriors, insects, dragons, etc. This as you can tell are composed of mostly monsters that are the same category. In this deck you have also can have spell cards that reflect your deck for instance dragon treasure, mountian, yami, and so on. (This is one right now is not very popular for online play)

Then we have burn decks. This type of deck is usually effect monster and trap heavy. The burn decks can be broken down into three groups.

The First is a burn deck that targets your opponent's life points. In this type of deck you will see ceasefire, skull invitation, chain energy, and toll to name a few.

The second type of burn deck that targets your opponet's cards. This type of deck will have your card destruction, morphing jar #1, needle worm and so on.

Then the third type is a combonation of the first two. This will target both his life points and cards. In my opinion this is the hardest of the three becuase you will have a lot of cards and probably will get dead draws and will not get the full effect that the previous two offer.

Another type of deck is one that is based around a particular monster. This can be broken down into two types. The most common one is the fusion deck. This is where you have your cyberstein and lose 5000 lps (lifepoints) to summon a fusion monster of your choice. The other type is based around a particular monster that is not fusion for example I am sure most know of Kaiba's deck on the series Yugioh. Well his deck revolves around his Blue Eyes White Dragons somtimes, but mostly he has a dragon deck.

Then you have your mil deck. This is where the deck is just basically milling around. You constantly stop oppenet's attacks and you destroy his monsters. In this type of deck you will see something like the combo swords of revealing light, scape goat, cannon solider, use cannon soldier's special ability, bring back scapegoat with magician of faith and in total do 4000 damage to your opponent's lps.

I hope this helps explain the different types, I am sure there are more that I probably didn't cover but these are relatively the basics. Feel free to make comments or share some insight about a particular deck.

Beat Down Deck

The goal of a beatdown deck is to just attack till your opponent's LPs are down to 0.


Mill Deck

The goal of a mill deck is to make your opponent run out of cards before you do.


Burn Deck

The goal of a burn deck is to do damage to your opponents LPs without attacking.


Theme Deck

A theme deck is based on a certain type of monster. Such as Warrior, Zombie, Spellcaster or Spirit Decks.


Attribute Deck

An attribute deck is a deck based around one certain attribute. Such as Light, Dark, Earth, Fire, Water Deck.


Control Deck

A control deck is based around controlling what your opponent can do. Common types of these decks control what is in the opponent's hand, but it can be used for decks that control the field as well.


Direct Attack Deck

A direct attack deck revolves around attacking your opponent even if they have monsters on the field. While a Toon deck is a form of this deck, Toons are a Theme.


Fusion Deck

This is a deck based around Fusion monsters. There are several ways to get Fusions out.

Standard fusion- Using Polymerization and the Fusion materil monsters or Fusion sub monsters.
Fusion gate- Using Fusion Gate instead of the traditional Polymerization.
Cyber Stein- By wasting 5000 LPs you can pull pretty much any Fusion out.
Summoner of Illusions- By sacrificing another monster you can pull a Fusion Monster out till the end of the turn
Cathedral of Nobles+Mystical Beast Serket- By tributing Mystical Beast you can pull a Fusion monster out.
Metamorphosis- By sacrificing a monster you can summon a fusion of the same level.


Ritual Deck

A deck based around using Ritual Monsters.


Exodia Deck

A deck based around getting all 5 pieces of Exodia into your hand.


Destiny Board Deck

A deck based around winning by getting all 5 destiny board pieces.



Other common terms for decks are as follows.


CC Deck

A CC deck stands for a Cookie Cutter deck. This is a deck that uses pretty much the same cards as other peoples decks. It is usually around 25-30 cards that are the same.


Hybrid Deck

A Hybrid deck use more than one type of deck. Such as a Burn deck that can attack as well.


OTK Deck/FTK Deck

OTK=One Turn Kill, this deck uses a combo that can beat you in one turn.
FTK=First Turn Kill, this is a deck that uses a combo that can beat you on the first turn without you doing anything.
