Is he flying in a hot air balloon?

how about he kept mistaking it for something else

so maybe he's in a desert and keeps thinking he see's his destination but its something else

or maybe its really dark when he's travelling and his destination is a village with lots of lights on

so he can see the village because its the only thing on the ground thats lit up for 400 miles

don't ask me i'm no good at this stuff lol
