Oblivion for the PS3 Improves on 360 Version Big Time
Well, it looks like a lot of myths are about to be busted regarding the PS3. Oblivion for the PS3 will have 2Xs faster loading times, better textures, better frame rates, and more. Check out IGN's Hands On.

--------

Fans of the Elder Scrolls series have always loved the flexibility the franchise afforded them during their adventures, but when the eagerly awaited Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was released last March, even they were astounded by its depth. Players could literally choose their own adventure within the massive game, which offered over 200 hours of play. Characters could be customized in various ways, and it was easy for gamers to make powerful magic users, fighters, thieves or other classes as they attempted to close the gates of Oblivion. For PC and Xbox 360 gamers, it was a match made in RPG heaven. Fortunately for PS3 owners, Oblivion will soon be descending upon the system. We got the chance to play the latest build of the game today, and we came away with new impressions from the land of Cyrodiil.

Apart from the initial scale of Oblivion, which was simply huge, Bethesda Game Studios augmented the adventure with eight downloadable plug-in features. Items like the Horse Armor download seemed much more of a minor adjustment than a significant addition to the gameplay. Others like the Orrery or Mehrunes' Razor provided separate locations for players to battle through, collecting experience and valuable items. Unlike the PC and 360 versions, the PS3 edition will not feature all eight of the currently available plug-ins for the game. They may find their way to the PlayStation Store at some point in time in the future, but they will not be added into the version as a "PS3 Collector's Edition" or a special copy of Oblivion. Instead, the title will only include the recently released Knights of the Nine side quest, as you attempt to recover lost artifacts of the Divine Crusader and restore glory to the order of warriors.

PS3 owners will get their own taste of Oblivion this March.
Players of the PC or 360 version of the quest know that only those characters who don't have any infamy associated to their name can begin the pilgrimage to start the Knights of the Nine quest. However, there have been a few changes made for the PS3 version. Characters can now immediately set out on their pilgrimage to the Wayshrines of the Divines as soon as they exit the sewers at the start of the game (which served as a tutorial). This immediately lets you bypass having to track down the rumor about the attack on Anvil Chapel and start on your quest for righteousness.

The PS3 version of Oblivion isn't a simple port of the game either, although players who have picked up the 360 version will be very familiar with the control scheme. For one thing, the PS3 version has been optimized to take advantage of the Cell processor and hardware that the system offers. As a result, the game runs a lot faster than the 360 build. Entering dungeons or buildings results in a load of 3-5 seconds, compared to the 7-10 seconds or longer for the 360 version of the game. Similarly, the amount of framerate drops or hitches that cropped up in the wilderness as you accessed a new area on the 360 have been substantially reduced on the PS3 version. There is a plan to completely eradicate these issues as the game nears release, as well as fixing a number of bugs that were present in the other builds. Kiss the item duplication glitch goodbye.

Visual textures are much sharper in the PS3 version of the game.
The visual presentation of Oblivion has also been significantly enhanced. While it was a beautiful title on the 360, far off environmental details often displayed low resolution textures. This has been fixed with new shaders dedicated to rendering the foreground cleanly with sharper details, so rocky landscapes now have craggy appearances instead of smooth, non-distinct surfaces. While there is still a fair amount of pop-in that occurs (which can't be helped due to the size of the world), the draw distance is farther than the 360 version. As a result, screens from the PS3 version should approach those from high end PCs running Oblivion, which is an impressive feat. We'll have more on Oblivion soon, but for now, check out these new screens.

April 4, 2007 The concept of games as art is rarely touched upon, undoubtedly due to the rarity of games one could bring up in a discussion of the concept with a straight face. fl0w is one of the exceptions - a Master of Fine Arts thesis by USC School of Cinematic Arts graduates Jenova Chen and Nicholas Clark. Originally realised in Flash, the game has improved in leaps and bounds after its jump to the Playstation Network, and it's here to manipulate your mood.

Starting out as a small organism in the shallows of a vast body of water, you encounter all kinds of interesting organisms, and eat them. Players move their organism around by holding the Sixaxis controller so its face is parallel to the ground, and tilting the controller down in the direction they want to move. It's the first successful implementation of the motion controls in the Sixaxis I've experienced - less than ten minutes had passed before I had forgotten about the controller in my hands completely.

Eating different organisms will grow and evolve your organism, and allow you to navigate deeper into the water. The graphics mimick nature in that large structures of immense beauty can be made recursively from small, simple shapes.

The music composed by Austin Wintory is relaxing, inviting, and sparse enough to leave plenty of room in the mix for the sound effects triggered by eating other organisms. The two mesh wonderfully and the result is a gripping aural experience defined by what you're doing in the game - a long overdue departure from the painfully short loops of anthemic synth lines and monotonous breakbeats passed off as music in several Xbox Live Marketplace games.

fl0w is a truly unique experience that is intuitive enough to be picked up and played by anybody, and deep enough to keep them there for a while. Given how easy it is to lose a couple of hours in the game, the only downside is that you'll probably have seen all there is to see within a similar timeframe.

Downloadable Mac and PC versions are available, but if you have a PS3 at your disposal, do yourself a favor and jump straight to the superior Playstation Network version

After trailing in sales, can the PS3's fall games line-up bring the system back up with the pack?

After a few quiet months and one or two public relations nightmares, the folks at Sony Computer Entertainment finally opened up with a gamer's day to show off the company's 2007 lineup. It's much more like what we've hoped to see all along, with a handful of great action games (Warhawk, Uncharted) and intriguing downloadable titles (Pain, Little Big Planet). With this software lineup, Sony might regain some of the ground they lost in 2006, as they've got more than a couple games that make a strong case for picking up a PS3.

August 23, 2007 In an ironic twist on the convergence theme, Sony has made some significant announcements at the Games Convention in Leipzig moving the PS3 and PSP towards becoming general entertainment and convenience platforms. Announcements included a TV Tuner and PVR software for PS3, a Video Download Service for PSP in conjunction with BSkyB, a voice chat, video chat and instant messaging service for PSP, and a satellite navigation accessory for PSP. On top of the recent release of the EUR50 Go!Cam which turns a PSP into a video and still camera, the “c” word (convergence) is very relevant.

Go!Cam offers a built in microphone to ensure continuous audio, the ability to change the direction of the camera lens vertically by 180 degrees and Go!Edit, an editing software package which allows users to save and edit photos, video and audio clips.

With clear designs on the PS3 becoming the epicentre of family entertainment, Sony announced the PlayTV TV Tuner and PVR accessory that is certain to have an impact on the home entertainment market. The twin channel, High Definition TV tuner and PVR software turns the PS3 into a TV recorder, allowing users to watch, pause and record live TV. With seamless connectivity to PSP, PlayTV allows you to set recordings, watch live TV and recorded TV programmes remotely on the PSP via a WiFi connection, or quickly transcode recorded TV shows for high quality viewing to the PSP by USB cable for remote viewing away from the home.

SCEE also introduced a host of new services for the company’s new non-gaming Go! Entertainment brand for PSP.

The Go! Video Download Service will launch in early 2008. Developed in conjunction with Sky, it will allow PSP owners in UK and Ireland to turn their PSP into a personalised library of programmes and will feature a vast selection of high quality entertainment. With content from Sky’s existing multi channel offering and support from a whole range of third party content owners, PSP owners will be able to subscribe to dedicated Sports, Entertainment and Animation packages as well as watch premier content on a pay per view basis.

Go!Messenger is a new voice chat, video chat and instant messaging service, scheduled for rollout throughout the SCEE territories in the New Year. Developed in conjunction with BT, Go! Messenger places a small application on PSP’s XMB (XrossMediaBar), which when downloaded separately from the web and installed to the Memory Stick, allows users to voice chat, video chat and instant message each other using VOIP from any WiFi hot spot.

To be launched early in 2008, Go!Explore is a satellite navigation product for the PSP that uses a GPS receiver accessory. Go!Explore incorporates both vehicle and pedestrian functionality, the very latest in three dimensional mapping technology and over 100 different categories of overlays for such things as speed cameras, petrol stations and restaurants.

Turner: PS3 Network Has All The Capabilities

When it comes to their respective online networks, PS3 is still a bit behind Xbox 360.

After all, the 360 has got that whole in-game XMB advantage at the moment. But PlayStation 3 has Home on the way, and in-game XMB is reportedly coming later this year.

Army of Twohttp://www.tech2.com/media/photogallery/armyoftwo1_450x360.jpg assistant producer Matt Turner recently spoke about working on the PlayStation Network.

"There are extra challenges [with PSN] just because the PS3 is newer to our team so we've had to work through some growing pains, getting used to a whole new system of development," Turner said in an interview with CVG.

"But it has all of the capabilities, it's just that at the moment we have more experience on the Xbox."

And it'll be easy enough to gather up one's friends to play along when you're tired of the AI.

"We have friends lists accessible during the game, you can send invites and your friends can join you - it's as easy as doing it on Xbox Live," he assured.

Rumor: New PS3 Will Be 160GB And

http://www.product-reviews.net/wp-content/userimages/2008/02/slim-ps3-rumor.jpg

Another day, another PS3 rumor has emerged.

The latest comes from T3, which claims they have a well-informed insider. This source claims that the newest PlayStation 3 model will be both fatter and slimmer.

The PS3 will be fatter in that it will have a whopping 160 gigabyte hard drive. It will be slimmer in terms of the external width and actual weight of the console.

Sony has given the usual response of refusing to comment and rumor and speculation. T3, however, counters that that's "exactly what they said before they dropped the size zero edition of the PSP."

With the multiple confirmations that the 80GB is being discontinued, Sony certainly appears to have something up their collective sleeves.

Logitech has unveiled their Driving Force GT Wheel - the official force-feedback wheel of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue for the PlayStation 3. Designed in collaboration with Gran Turismo developers Polyphony Digital, the wheel features a realtime adjustment dial, allowing you to adjust brake bias, traction control and damper settings on the fly.

Obviously aiming to be a device that doesn't feel or look out of place beside a PlayStation 3 and expensive HDTV, the Driving Force GT Wheel features:

A new force-feedback system, promising ultra-realistic simulation of understeer, oversteer and traction loss
Full-size gas and brake pedals
Both sequential stick shift and wheel-mounted paddles for changing gears
11" wheel with comfortable rubber grip
900 degrees of movement
Illuminated horn
Compatibility with Gran Turismo 3 & 4 on the PS2

The Driving Force GT will be available in the US, Europe and Australia in early May, with a suggested retail price of US$150/AU$249. Gran Turismo 5 Prologue will be released in North America on April 17, available on Blu-ray disc and as a paid download from the PlayStation Store. Our readers in Europe and Australia can expect the game closer to the end of April.

this is mad awsome

the emotive EPOC neuroheadset

http://img.qj.net/uploads/articles_module/114138/emotiveepoc-01_qjgenth.jpg?107003

looking on us03's last post about the driving wheel, here's somthing i saw yestarday. Its a gadget that uses technology to make brain controlled gaming happen...lets look on the technological side of it (or at least a more technological side)

the headset uses a Brain Computer Intrface (BCI) which lets the headset pick up neuron signals from ure brain and transmit them to ure in game character...in this case it means control over ure charactrs ****** expressions and actions...it also uses ure thoughts and emotions to influence gameplay in some way

Nam Do, CEO of Emotiv Systems, described the new technology by saying:

When integrated into games, virtual worlds and other simulated environments, this technology will have a profound impact on the user’s experience. Since announcing our prototype (http://ps3.qj.net/tags/prototype/2384) last year, we’ve made dramatic technological breakthroughs in order to create the first wearable, affordable brain-controlled gaming headset. We’re excited to see our vision realized this year and look forward to enabling gamers out there to experience brain-controlled gaming for themselves

Emotive systems has signed up with IBM to explore the potential of BCI technology beyond th gaming market. They hope to build virtual world environments which will be completely lifelike. Ideas like virtual training simulations for industries like the government and enterprise. this is just the beginning of wat IBM hope to explore

the emotive EPOC is lookng to be released through selected retailers in late 2008 for an RRP of 299 USD (162-163 GBP...done using a converter on my phone)

i'm assuming that this will released a little later in non-US regions but this IBM are definatly lookin into more next-gen...this looks like quite the gadget to get lol put ure thinking caps on :)
